 Make your computer faster
This tutorial will teach you how to increase your operating system speed 3 times faster. This steps should be applied by either slow and fast computers. it will speed up your operating system surfing.

There are 26 easy steps. it might take a bit long to apply them all especially if you're not familiar with windows registry, but trust me it worth it.

1.. Visual effects should be set to a minimum.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Visual Effects Tab > Adjust for best performance
Raj: This will give some performance improvement but the same time we will loose the GUI effect - nowadays all want their desktop to be nice and full of 3D effect.

2. Switch Off Desktop Background Image
Right Click Desktop > Properties > Desktop Tab > Background None
Raj: Not required. Who will eager to see their desktop without no background pic?

3. Disable Screen Saver
Right Click Desktop > Properties > Screen Saver > None
Raj: Not required.

4. Disable Fast User Switching
Start > Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off > Untick Use Fast User Switching
Raj. For personal computer, yes you can disable it

5. Switch Off Power Schemes
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options > Always On > Turn off monitor and turn off hard discs to Never
Raj: This is for power saving, will not give any direct performance improvement.

6. Switch Off Hibernation
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Options > Hibernate > Untick Hibernation
Raj: Not required. Hibernation is good to have.

7. Activate DMA on Hard Discs/CD ROMS
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Right Click Primary IDE channel and Secondary IDE channel > Properties > Advanced Settings Tab > Transfer Mode >"DMA if available"
Raj: Nowadays all computer is set to DMA.

8. Disable System Sounds
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds Tab > Sound Scheme to None.
Raj: Not required.

9. Do Not Map Through Soundcard
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Hardware Tab > (highlight your soundcard from the list) > Properties > Audio Devices > (highlight your soundcard from the list) > Properties
Raj: Not required.

10. Disable System Restore
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > System Restore Tab. Tick the "Turn off System Restore on all Drives"
Raj: Good to have.

11. Disable Automatic Updates
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Automatic Updates > Turn off automatic updating. I want to update my computer manually
Raj: Yes, you may turn off but dont forget to update your system frequently

12. Startup and Recovery Options
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Untick Automatically Restart
Raj: Dont change

13. Disable Error Reporting
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Advanced > Error Reporting > Disable Error Reporting
Raj: Good to have.

14. Disable Remote Assistance
Start > Settings > Control Panel> System > Remote > Untick Allow remote assistance invitations to be sent from this computer
Raj: Will not gain any performance but you may disable if not required

15. Fix Swap File (Virtual Memory)
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory Change > Custom Size. Set initial and maximum size to the same value
Raj: The value usually should be 2x of your physical memory

16. Speed Up Menus
Start > Run > Regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_ USER > Control Panel > Desktop Folder. Set MenuShowDelay to 1
Raj: Be carefull when using "regedit". It can cause your system not working properly.

17. Disable Offline Files
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > Offline Files Untick "Enable Offline Files"
Raj: Not required. This is actually will speed-up your browsing but you may clear this once a week.

18. Disable Remote Desktop
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Remote > Untick "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
Raj: Will not gain any performance but you may disable if not required

19. Disable Internet Synchronise Time
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Date and Time > Internet Time > Untick "Automatically synchronize with internet time server"
Raj: Good to have. No performance impact of this

20. Disable Hide Inactive Icons
Start > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu > Taskbar TAB > Uncheck "Hide Inactive Icons"
Raj: Good to have. No performance impact of this

21. Disable Automatic Desktop Cleanup Wizard
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Untick "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days"
Raj: Good to have. No performance impact of this

22. Disable NTFS Last Access Time Logging (NTFS File Systems Only)
Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > Filesystem. Add a new DWORD value - "NtfsDisableLastAcc essUpdate" and set value to 1.
Raj: Careful when editing windows registries

23. Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips
Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_CURRENT_ USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > Advanced. Create a new DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips and set to 0.
Raj: Careful when editing windows registries

24. Disable CDROM Autoplay
Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > Cdrom. Set autorun to 0.
Raj: Good to have. No performance impact of this

25. Disable Disc Indexing Service
Right Click Start > Explorer > Right Click Each Disc > Properties > Untick "Allow Indexing Service to index this disc for fast file searching"
Raj: This will affect the permance while it doing the indexing but the same time it will give faster access to data.

26.Restart ur pc...enjoy!! ! :)
Raj: Yes, this is usual in windows, every time we change something, we need to restart the PC.

Hi Arul

Thanks for posting this tricks.. I'll post my comments for all items that you listed above. Since its a long list, i'll write my comments on your original post by editing them.

Below are some of my tips to speed up the windows (not the PC)
1. Please make sure your desktop is clean, do not put too many file in desktop as it will slow down the startup time
2. Remove unnecessary startup program
3. Once a month, do disk de-fragmentation (Program > Accessories > System Tool)
