Last time there is no theme provided by Gmail. So, there are few Firefox add-on available that will do the job - change the default Gmail theme to something else. Since that is Firefox add-on, sure that cannot be done in IE.
But now, Google team is officially provide theme in Gmail.

Re: Want to change Gmail theme? Myself using theme for my gmail recently. Last time for igoogle has the theme but now can set the theme for gmail as well. am I right? But from the day one I'm using IE what. Still can set the themes.
